KnowledgeNet @ VCU Users Guide

Alert: Knowledgenet to shut down on 31st December

Knowledgenet, the web-based training system which is available to all VCU faculty, staff and students will be shut down on 31st of December, 2007. It will be replaced by a new product called Skillsoft that offers similar tutorials and assessments. The process for logging in will remain the same--users will be able to access this resource through the MyVCU Portal. If you have enrolled yourself in Knowledgenet courses or are currently taking computer literacy assessments for your program, please make sure you finish them by Dec. 31st, 2007.

Logging In To KnowledgeNet

Knowledgenet has recently been purchased by Thomson NETg. Aa a result of this merger, the interface on their website has recently changed and accessing the VCU Computer Literacy Assessments has also changed. Please follow the following instruction to access the VCU Computer Literacy Assessments

  • Login using My VCU (or the VCU Portal)
  • Select the Knowledge Net link on the Single Sign-On Links box in the upper right of the page
  • On the "successfully authenticated" page, select proceed (instead of going directly to the assessment from the drop down menu)
  • A second login page will appear temporarily and then you will be rerouted into the website. If you are not rerouted and the second login page remains, then you have a pop-up blocker active on your browser and you will need to deactivate it for this website
  • Once you are on the Thomson NETg website select the Course tab in the upper right hand corner of the page.
  • When the catalogue is generated and the courses are listed, go to the bottom of the page and select the Miscellaneous folder.
  • Find the Computer Literacy Assessment that you have been assigned and put a check mark in the box next to it and select Enroll Now in the upper right hand corner of the page
  • Then select View My Courses
  • Click on the title of the Computer Literacy Assessment and it will expand to display the various parts to the assessment.
  • You will need to take each part and score a 70% or better
  • Please see VCU Assessments below for more information about the assessment

VCU Assessments

  • If you are a VCU student, you may be required to take a VCU Assessment in order to graduate, or in order to enter one of VCU's graduate school programs. You can access the VCU Assessments in one of two ways. First, upon being authenticated by the VCU login page, you can select one of the VCU Assessments from the drop-down menu and you will be pipelined directly to that assessment. Secondly, upon authentication, you can select the proceed button to get to the VCU/KnowledgeNet course library. Once there you can scroll down until you get to the VCU Assessments.
  • Once you launch an assessment, you will be presented with a pretest. You can only take the pretest once. If you score a 70 or better, you have passed that particular section of the assessment and you do not have to take it again. However, if you do not get a 70 or better, you will be offered a personal tutorial--personal in that the tutorial has been customized around the questions that you missed on the pretest. You may also select complete to take the complete tutorial.
  • At the end of either tutorial (personal or complete) is a posttest. If you did not pass the pretest, then you must pass the posttest with a score of 70 or better. You may take the posttest up to 100 times. If you would rather skim through the tutorial, or jump to the posttest, select the Map at the bottom, left-hand side and use the scroll bar to get to the appropriate place.
  • To view your scores, logon to the KnowledgeNet website by selecting the proceed button on the VCU login page (instead of selecting your specific assessment title from the drop-down menu). Once you are on the KnowledgeNet website, select your assessment title from the My Learning Campus page, then select the Stats button (just under the my progress window). Your highest posttest score will be counted. The only "STATS" that are relevant to the VCU Assessment are the pre-test score and the highest post-test score. If you earn a 70 or better on either, you have successfully passed that portion of the assessment. Ignore the % Complete stat, it only pertains the tutorial. The Center for Teaching Excellence runs weekly reports and will send your scores to the appropriate school administrator. You may also choose to print out your scores for your own records by selecting the print function on the top, right-hand side of the browser window.

What is KnowledgeNet

  • KnowledgeNet is a computer/web-based training system available to all VCU students, faculty, and staff. Approximately 280 different tutorials are available online 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. In addition to the tutorials, KnowledgeNet also provides assessments. There are assessments that are associated with each of the tutorials, or you may be assigned a customized assessment as an academic requirement. To access the KnowledgeNet website you will need a login ID and password. Once you obtain your login ID and password, you can access any one of the available tutorials or assessments.
  • You can go directly to the KnowledgeNet website from any of the User Guide pages by clicking on the KnowledgeNet logo at the top of every page.
  • If you are new to KnowledgeNet, we recommend taking a Guided Tour of their website (if you have speakers, make sure they are turned on).

How to Use KnowledgeNet

There are a number of ways that you might want to use KnowledgeNet.

  • You may be a student who is required to take a Computer Literacy Assessment in order to graduate, or to enter a particular School's graduate program.
  • You may be a faculty member who wants to assign your students a tutorial on how to use Microsoft Word or Excel before you assign your first assignment.
  • You may be a member of the VCU staff who is interested in their own professional development.
  • If you have a pop-up blocker installed on your computer, you must disable it for the duration of your session with KnowledgeNet. Some latter versions of Netscape may have a pop-up blocker active as a default setting. If a KnowledgeNet login page appears and remains on your screen, go to the edit menu at the top of your browser window and select preferences and look in the privacy and security category and select pop-up windows. Then uncheck the box "block unrequested pop-up windows."

Trouble Shooting

  • You may experience difficulties attempting to launch courses that are located in the VCU - Business Skills or VCU - Web Authoring categories. The reason is because these courses are provided by SkillSoft (formerly SmartForce) and they have different computer / browser requirements. The following link contains information that will help you modify your browser settings which should allow you to successfully launch any of the SkillSoft courses.

    When you call, please be sure to indicate that you are with Virginia Commonwealth University and that the SkillSoft course that you are attempting to launch is through a third part vendor-KnowledgeNet

Requirements / Support

  • To access the tutorials / assessments on the KnowledgeNet Web site requires Macromedia Flash, Adobe Acrobat, and the latest version of QuickTime. Go to the KnowledgeNet Help desk for free downloads.
