Exploring Learning-Centered Teaching:
A Framework for Self-Assessment

This workshop provides faculty members with the opportunity to participate in a discussion about what constitutes learning-centered teaching practice, and to assess their own courses and teaching with regard to learning-centered notions. Participants will become familiar with the work of MaryEllen Weimer, and use a rubric developed from her book, Learner-Centered Teaching: Five Key Changes to Practice to evaluate sample course syllabi. Emphasis will be placed on determining the appropriateness of learning-centered practices in a variety of teaching contexts.

By the end of this session, you should be able to

  • Compare and contrast instruction-centered teaching with learning-centered teaching.
  • Discuss the merits of various learning-centered practices in different teaching contexts.
  • Identify specific areas in your own teaching / courses that warrant reconsideration or modification.
