You Know What You Taught, But What Did They Learn?

You know what you taught, but you probably won’t know what they learned until the test. Classroom Assessment Techniques (CATs) are relatively short, in-class exercises that afford both students and instructors an opportunity to self-assess and self-adjust between tests. CATs can provide faculty with valuable data that can help them assess how effective specific learning activities are so they can adjust how they are teaching more quickly and responsively. CATs can also help students become more responsible learners.


By the end of this session, you should be able to

  • Compare and contrast formative and summative assessment.
  • Identify the nature and function of classroom assessment techniques.
  • Consider ways to effectively Integrate CATs into your teaching.
